Tapeats/Stone Creek Route

24 October, 2022

Summary

A portion of the trip around Powell Plateau connects Tapeats Creek to Stone Creek and is getting some travel as a side-hike from either end. For 2022, this was part of the Neds-pedition hike to fill in a missing section for Grand Canyon end-to-end. The first time was with George S and Gary L when this was unknown territory for most hikers, but was one of the easier off-trail sections going around Powell Plateau. For my third visit here conditions have changed some, related to Tapeats high floods, and more frequent travel. Most of the way now, there is some indication of a track with some helpful cairns.

Access

Tapeats Creek trails have been affected by seasonal floods and the right bank trail is more developed from use than before. Follow the track from Upper Tapeats Camp until you would be forced higher and cross the creek at this place. Continue on the left bank.

The Route

From Tapeats Creek near where the trail crosses to the right side, the left bank has been washed-out and covered with debris. It can be easier now to find the start of the route by getting to the right-bank and then wading back across where the main trail goes up the ramp. But keep in mind the creek is not safe in the springtime high-flow runoff, so the Stone Creek Route will not be accessible.

Supergroup Cliff Ramp

The track ascends the primary ledge in the middle of the Bass Formation cliff-band when continuing downstream is not an option, this is the same cliff ledge as the hiker trail to the Tapeats beach area. Many parts are very narrow and close to the edge and hikers need to be accustomed to a sense of exposure but with good footing.

Above the River

With the increased human travel added to the game travel the main thing is to always look for a clear track or some other sign of travel. In 2022 we camped at the 133-Mile side-canyon with water flowing but this would be very rare. Note that in both sections from 133, the route changes a level with very little guidance so it will be useful to have your best route-finder in the lead and make sure the last of the group finds the good breaks.

Stone Creek Waterfall

The bypass on creek-left is well-traveled from the river.

The hike upstream is much more interesting and goes very far to the last waterfall in a narrow Redwall cleft.

Difficulty and Appeal

Unless doing the start of the trek around Powell Plateau, or if determined to see Stone Creek on foot, the ledge access and rugged south-facing slopes should keep most hikers away.
