Rock Garden

Cheops Pyramid and Plateau — The pointy peak of the southern promontory is the pyramid, and the major butte is the plateau, but both of these together are known as Cheops Pyramid. This landmark can be climbed in a day hike from Phantom Ranch campground via the northwest ridge. See Cheops Route report for details and accesses to Utah Flats and Phantom Canyon. The actual pyramid is a much more difficult objective.

1982 June - I was concerned about the risks to a lone climber, but was very careful and in top condition. I left Phantom Ranch (on the second day of a cross-canyon hike with Dad) at 8AM and reached the top of the butte by 10:30. The register held notes on early ascents, the names of a party of two, and the most recent, a larger group in 1977.
